Afghanistan in 2016 had the second lowest health worker density in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), with a ratio of 4.6 medical doctors, nurses and midwives per 10,000 people, considerably below the threshold for critical shortage of 23 health care professionals per 10,000.
